I think it was last year that I rekindled my love for breadsticks. I remember being a huge fan of crazy bread (breadsticks from Little Caesars) when I was little, but ever since I moved out and became a person who paid for pizza instead of just eating what my mom ordered, I’d skip ordering breadsticks, because I mistakenly thought pizza over breadsticks.

But then, Mike and I made a stop in Eugene on a Pacific Northwest road trip and decided to order pizza to our hotel room from Sizzle Pie. As we were perusing the menu, the breadsticks caught my eye and I must’ve said something about how breadsticks sounded perfect, even though we never order breadsticks. And even though I said we shouldn’t because carbs with a side of carbs is how one becomes as fluffy as a regular crust pizza, Mike ordered them anyway. Good call Mike, good call, because they were DELICIOUS.

They came with your choice of dipping sauces and we got the standard house red sauce and ranch. Breadsticks and ranch are a match made in heaven – crispy hot doughy pizza dough dipped in creamy ranch…so good! We still don’t order breadsticks here at home (but always do when we’re near Sizzle Pie) but sometimes if I have some no-knead pizza dough hanging out in the fridge, I’ll make some cheesy sticks. If we’re feeling really extra, I’ll make some homemade pizza sauce and ranch for dipping.

Breadsticks, ranch and pizza sauce for everyone!

Cheesy Breadsticks Recipe
makes about 8 sticks

  • 1 batch no-knead pizza dough or store bought dough
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup shredded cheddar
  • 1 tablespoon parmesan

Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

Gently roll out the pizza dough into a rough rectangle and cut into 8 sticks. Combine the melted butter and garlic together and generously brush onto the breadsticks. Evenly divide the shredded cheddar and parmesan.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cheese is melty and the breadsticks are golden brown. Enjoy warm with pizza and ranch sauce!

Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe
makes about 1.5 cups of sauce

  • 1 (28 oz) can peeled whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 springs fresh basil, leaves attached
  • 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and cut in half
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • salt, to taste

via Serious Eats

Blend the tomatoes in a blender until just puréed. In a saucepan, heat up the oil and butter together over medium low, until the butter is melted. Add the garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Stir until fragrant, but not brown, about 3 minutes. Add the puréed tomatoes, basil, onion halves, and sugar. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat until one or two bubbles break the surface every so often. Cook, reducing, for about 1 – 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove the basil and onions. Taste and season with salt. Use for pizza or dipping!

Easy Homemade Ranch Recipe
makes about 3/4 cups ranch

  • 1/2 cup kewpie mayo
  • 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions, finely chopped fresh chives, and/or Italian parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Stir together all of the ingredients. Adjust seasoning to taste and enjoy!
