2014 Holiday Gift Guide and a Giveaway

Posted November 29, 2014 by Stephanie
i am a food blog 2014 gift guide - www.iamafoodblog.com

I really love kitchen tools and what you’ll find in my kitchen is a good mix of super-specific items and general use. I don’t tend to get a lot of one use items, but when I do, I think long and hard before I purchase. This is my ultimate kitchen gadget-y wish list – a mix of high-end and affordable products. To make these products even more affordable, you might be able to find some voucher codes! I would love to receive any of these items this holiday season and I’m sure the cook in your life would too!

gift guide: nomiku - www.iamafoodblog.com

Ever since I tried rigging up a ghetto-sous vide machine to make Momofuku’s 48 hour short ribs, I’ve been wanting a sous vide machine. Nomiku just came out with a new wifi home sous vide machine and I backed it because I was so impressed with their past incarnation. Essentially, a sous vide machine lets you cook food (usually in a vacuum sealed bag) in water bath set at an extremely low temperature. The sous vide machine both heats and circulates water and your food is gently cooked to scientific precision.

searzall: nomiku - www.iamafoodblog.com

If you’re going to ask for a sous-vide machine, the next thing you might want to add to your wish list is a Searzall. I don’t have one of these (they just finished their kickstarter and are gearing up to sell on Amazon), but it’s definitely on my radar. It’s basically a portable salamander – use to sear sous vide steaks, melt cheese, or finish dishes off with a blast of heat.

gift guide: gir spatulas - www.iamafoodblog.com

The above two items are things that I think I’ll love, but they’re definitely more things I wish I had rather than things I need. These spatulas on the other hand, I have in my drawer right now and reach for all the time. I’ve talked about my love for silicone spatulas previously and I’m still a big fan of them. These colorful guys from Get It Right make me happy every time I reach for them. They make a perfect little gift. They’re unibody (which means no grotty parts to clean), hold up to heat well, and are dishwasher safe.

garlic-press

One of my favourite kitchen tools is a garlic press. I actually like mincing garlic (I’m weird, I know) but I don’t really like my fingers smelling like garlic every time I do it. Garlic presses take that problem away. This press from Savora is both pretty and functional. It’s an excellent gift for a garlic lover.

le-creuset

I wish I could send everyone a holiday present but since I can’t, I’m doing the next best thing and hosting a little Le Creuset Giveaway!

Giveaway: I’m giving away a Le Creuset Cherry Wok, a Le Creuset Balti Dish and a cute little Le Creuset Condiment Pot. They’re cherry red and perfect for the holiday season – thank you Le Crueset!

Enter: Leave a comment letting me know what the best gift you received was and why and then use the widget to enter. Open to US residents only. Winner will be selected at random and contacted by email. Good luck!

Update: Congrats Vicky! Get ready to start cooking! :D Look for an email from me shortly.

On the first birthday I had after becoming a mom, my husband gave me a book I had been wanting to read (wish I could remember the title) and let me stay in bed all day and read the whole book while he took care of our daughter. I remember that it was the most decadent feeling to be able to stay in bed all day and do absolutely nothing! Nothing has topped that in 14 years.

  65. BT says:

Best gift I ever received was when I was about 5 or so. I wasn’t a terribly active kid, so I typically wanted your standard issue plastic figures/toys/playsets/etc. I would’ve been ecstatic to receive gifts that fell entirely in that category. Particularly, I remember asking for some huge, expensive, playset of one of my favorite superheroes of the time, Captain Power – now, as an adult, something I recognize and acknowledge as an expensive hunk of useless plastic, but as a child, of course, the object of my imagination. On Christmas morning, I found a large box under the tree, which I was sure was this very playset I’d asked for. However, when I unwrapped it, it was instead my first bicycle. Not going to lie – at the time, I was a bit let down. But that all went away when I first was able to ride that bike on my own (after plenty of trial and error, of course). That first ride on a bike, with no training wheels and no help from your parents, is an irreplaceable childhood memory.

  66. The best gift I’ve ever received was a trip to Nigeria to meet my family for the first time. I was 21 and about to graduate from college, and I came in to surprise my grandmother on her 80th birthday. It was amazing to finally see so many people I’d only spoken to over the phone. The amount of love I received was amazing, and the food was just great.

  92. Patrick Wohlmut says:

The best gift I received from my wife last year was cooking lessons. I never learned to cook from classes or other people. I learned from books, and YouTube videos, and TV (bless the holy name of Julia Child!). In one evening I learned five different cooking techniques, which we used to cook five different dishes. Having that kind of hands-on help, being guided through the steps, and having the opportunity to bring together the separate skills I’d picked up on my own, was invaluable.

My first Christmas being married, my husband made me an ornament that he fashioned using jewelry wire. It was beautiful and effervescent. It depicted my husband and I hanging off of a heart facing each other. He is wearing a top hat and I am wearing a flowing skirt. It was the most perfect and meaningful present I have ever received. Having Asian ancestry, typically we do what our mums did, and my mum did well with the steamer that came with the rice cooker, and whenever I move to a new place, a stainless steel or aluminum steamer is my must-haves. Then recently, since moving to Boston and taking a wee break from work, I started cooking, meaning serious cooking, getting acquainted with some basic recipes for Dim Sum (which up till now, have only found pleasure in the eating), some basic recipes for Southeast Asian desserts, and more. Then one day my husband bought me this bamboo steamer. Thanks for the giveaway… I will always remember the Xmas I was about seven years old when my Mom gave me a green Schwinn Sting Ray bicycle with a silver-white seat. It was delivered the day before Christmas, and I remember her making sure that I was the one who answered the door when it arrived. I have great childhood memories riding that bicycle everywhere with my friends, back before the days of “helicopter parenting”: during the summers I would leave our house, riding the bike, in the morning, and not return until dusk…no worries, just absolute childhood freedom !

I live in Ohio, where it’s absolutely icy and dangerous on the roads in the winter. The best Christmas gift I ever received was a set of new tires for my car. The reason why is how I was surprised with them. I visited my then-bf, and he asked to use my car, which I thought was strange, since he had his own, but, I just shrugged and gave him the keys. Perhaps an hour or two after he came back, he asked me to take a ride with him. I am apparently oblivious, as I didn’t notice that my car was no longer in the parking lot. We drove around to a tire store, where there were sparkly new tires on my little car! He had walked back home from the tire place after dropping off my car, and it was COLD outside!

Actually it was January last year but I call it a Holiday gift because she was diagnosed during Thanksgiving. My MIL’s cancer was low grade, completely removed by removing that lobe of her lung and didn’t require chemo. That was a gift because I doubt she would have survived the treatment at age 70 in her frail condition.
