Do you guys every plan things out perfectly only to have a wrench thrown in the plans? What the heck does that saying even mean? Anyway, Mike and I left on Monday for a very long, very exciting trip across Canada! It’s Canada’s 150th birthday this year and we’ve always wanted to drive from sea to shining sea, so we figured that this year was the year to do it. Unlike most trips, we’re kind of winging this one, so it comes as no surprise that halfway to our first destination, we realized that we forgot one very important thing.

The funny thing is, we went through a checklist as we were leaving our house. But somehow, just around lunchtime, as we started talking about what we were going to cook for dinner, at camp. I realized with horror that we left our bag of cold items in the fridge! Luckily, none of it was perishable, except for a bunch of cilantro. We contemplated going back, but in the end decided, rest in peace cilantro. I guess it’ll be a not-so-nice-slimy-surprise for the friend that we have keeping an eye on the place.

So, instead of the camp tacos we had planned, we made do with store bought meatballs. They were actually really good! But, if we had some of this miso glazed tofu to roast over the fire, I think I would have been in heaven. Now that I think about it, these guys would have been ideal for camping. I could have prepared the glaze and skewered everything beforehand and we could have been smelling the sweet-n-savory flavors of fire, miso, and tofu. Next time, I guess.

Anyway, Mike and I are THRILLED to be on this trip. We’ve got recipe posts lined up, but we’re also going to be posting about our trip on the regular, so keep an eye out for that.

Hope your Thursday is going great!

Grilled Sweet and Savory Miso Glazed Tofu/Tofu Dengaku Recipe
12 skewers of tofu

  • 2 tablespoons sake
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1/4 cup white miso
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • oil for brushing
  • 250 gram package pressed tofu
  • sliced green onions
  • toasted sesame seeds

Place the sake and mirin in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add the miso and stir until smooth. Stir in the sugar and remove from the heat and let cool while you slice your tofu and green onions.

Cut the tofu into 12 even pieces. Heat up a grill or a non-stick frying pan. Be sure to oil the grill or pan and grill/fry all sides of the tofu over medium-high heat, brushing evenly with sauce, until golden and caramelized.

Top with green onions and toasted sesame seeds. Enjoy!
