This is part 2 of Tabasco’s 10 ingredient challenge – 5 different recipes made from any of these 10 ingredients: Tabasco, tuna, brioche, eggs, mint/basil/cilantro, dark chocolate, eggplant, cherry tomatoes, cider vinegar and maple syrup.

Ever since I made crispy salt and pepper french toast I’ve been on a savory French toast kick. There’s just something that makes so much sense about bread and eggs being savory. I always have a hard time deciding between sweet and savory breakfasts, but these days I’m definitely leaning towards savory.

Did you guys grow up eating French toast? It wasn’t something that my mom usually made at home, but when we went out for breakfast, French toast would be my number one choice – especially how they do French toast in HK cafes: deep fried, topped with butter and doused with syrup. This spicy French toast is nothing like the super sweet French toast of my childhood. This French toast is sophisticated! If you’re looking for something with a bit more flavor, this might be the breakfast for you. It has crisp edges, slightly spicy eggy insides and it’s topped off with a quick cherry tomato sauce. It’s fast, fresh and delicious!

Spicy Savory French Toast with Pan Roasted Cherry Tomatoes
serves 1-2

Pan Roasted Basil Cherry Tomatoes

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped basil

Spicy Savory French Toast

  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons Tabasco
  • 1 tablespoon chopped basil
  • sprinkle of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 4 mini brioche buns cut into slices

Roast the tomatoes: Heat a bit of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cherry tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cook, shaking pan frequently until the tomatoes start to soften and skins start to burst, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and toss with basil.

In a shallow bowl, beat together the egg, tabasco, basil and pepper. Dip slices of bread into egg mix allowing the bread to soak up the eggy goodness. Melt a touch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the soaked slices of bread and fry, flipping once, 2-3 minutes per side or until deeply golden brown and crispy. Enjoy warm with the roasted tomatoes, fresh basil and more tabasco if needed.

  1. oh my god! I could of have written a love letter to french toast as kid. I love having the span and egg sandwish as a kid but Number one sweet thing is french toast with heaps of syrup.

The kicked up flavor of this toast would make any breakfast complete.

  2. The savory french toast is gorgeous. I’m also doing the challenge and I was hoping to see some french toast. I like your take on this and your pictures are awesome!

  3. I love breakfast food and always have an internal debate of if I want to go for sweet or savoury. This french toast sounds (and looks!) amazing. I will be making this soon.

I love this! I love french toast but for some reason, as I’ve gotten older, I can’t eat sweets for breakfast. This is the perfect solution, thank you! Now, must check out the salt and pepper french toast too!

omg so much YES to savory French toast!!!!! And spicy too, eeee. I didn’t grow up with French toast either, but made my first homemade version a couple months ago (also savory, hiiigh-five) and was so hooked. I need to try this next time. (Also, the HK version sounds amazing. Have you ever been to Australia Dairy Company? How does Hong Kong just win at breakfast? Slash everything.)

  6. This looks amazing! Love the savory french toast!

That picture of those cherry tomatoes is awesome. I love this twist on french toast! We did eat it quite often at home, but it was definitely of the sweeter variety.

  8. Mmmmmmmmmm….. How do you think up these amazing combinations? French toast and tomatoes? I can’t wait to try these this weekend.

This sounds so great! I love French toast, too, and we did eat a lot of it growing up, but just the really standard eggy kind with cinnamon and maple syrup. I don’t make it much now because starting my day with that much sweet syrup always sends my blood sugar soaring and then CRASHING. This is a much better option! AND SPICY. yes please :)

  10. This might be overkill but I would eat this would a fried egg or soft scrambled eggs on top! Eggs on eggy bread :)

  11. Oh YES!! (wish I lived in your kitchen)

  12. Nikki says:

I will definitely be trying this! Yesterday morning I made a different savory french toast with roasted tomatoes, hummus, and a fried egg on top. This toast looks like the perfect vehicle for those ingredients!

I’ve never heard of savory french toast which is sad because this sounds delicious!

  14. Oh my, savory french toast is genius. I love french toast but always feel terrible eating it because I don’t like eating too much sugar in the morning. This looks like it does the trick though.

  15. Love the sound of savoury french toast – yum! I’d love to add some grilled asparagus too!

I just stumbled across your blog – I’m always on the hunt for newness, being a food blogger myself – though more of the restaurant kind (I’m a disaster in the kitchen!). I just had to tell you how amazing I think your photography is! I could only ever hope to photograph food as beautifully as you do. Count me in as an avid reader from now on (even though I can’t cook. Perhaps you’ll inspire me to learn?!)
