Don’t you love getting things in the mail? I love receiving packages, but even more than that, I love handwritten mail. I remember having a pen pal in grade 2 – we wrote to each other about our days at school and sent each other scratch-and-sniff stickers. She was just the nicest girl (hi Danielle!) and I remember being so jealous of the fact that she was living on a farm and had her own chickens and a goat.

I’ve had a couple of pen pals since: in grade 10 I wrote letters in French to a girl who told me all about her wild all night dance party adventures (the clubs in Greece stayed opened until 4am and had no age restrictions) and I also exchanged letters with another shy pen pal who didn’t really write much at all. Now that I think about it, I don’t even really remember where I got these pen pals from. I mean, I’m pretty sure that they were arranged through school because I never actually bought any stamps or anything…

There’s something really romantic about physically putting pen to paper, but I guess it’s as lot easier to type and send off emails! I have a busy weekend ahead – my nephew is turning one. I’m so excited, I cannot believe he’s a year old already! I’ve been enlisted to take some photos of the bash. I hope they turn out well!

Webstuff:

1. It’s a real life Up house!
2. Sandwiches can be works of art: build yourself a better sandwich.
3. Avocados are super thirsty (like almonds). Here’s a handy list of produce that isn’t too thirsty.
4. Apparently I’m not very good at logic/math. I tried and failed to figure out Cheryl’s birthday.
5. Why we buy things to be “cool.
6. I’m into documentaries and this one on sake is on my to-watch list.

Link Love:

1. This spring onion and pea flatbread!
2. I want to fall asleep on a herbed focaccia raft in a sea of pimento romesco.
3. These beet-red barbecue pork buns are calling my name.

I’ve got my eyes on you:

1. This awesome wooden toy breakfast set is the wrong age toy for my nephew, but I’m going to keep it in mind for the future. It’s too cute!
2. I covet this vaccum.
3. Thinking about buying this dress but thinking it’s maybe a little too crazy?

Have an awesome weekend friends!

love & potatoes,
xoxo Steph

PS – I was gifted a package from Not Another Bill and I absolutely loved everything in the box, especially the Opinel knife set!

PPS – I’m headed to New York soon. Help a girl out and tell me what your favorite/must eats are?!

  1. You like my buns!? *squeal* Thank you so much the link love. Also That article about cool, I seriously recommend you get yourself a copy! It makes for an enlightening read.

  2. Don’t miss Ootoya, and consider splurging for a seat at Momofuku Ko!

  3. Abby says:

Receiving packages & letters in the mail is the best! It’s just so much fun.
And that dress is NOT too crazy!! Buy it; it’s so perfect for you! <3

  4. Yeah! Edith Macefield house! That’s just a few blocks from me… that development is an eyesore… but it is where my neighborhood Trader Joes and Top Pot Donuts live, so… trade offs.

  5. Adrianna says:

Dude. Last time I was in NY (last week) I had a reservation at Contra. I couldn’t end up going bc my friend got sick but it’s on my list. GO FOR ME AND ENJOY!

  6. Lynn says:

Blue Bottle Coffee, Chelsea Market, and Momofuku are my favorite stops.

I used to drive by the house on my way to work when I lived in Seattle. I never knew the story, just thought it was odd.

  7. Lynn says:

I had to make another comment about that dress. My friend owns it and it’s a fantastic piece. Extremely fun!

  8. Lindsey says:

pen pals were the best, weren’t they? i had a couple through a program in grade school, and loved corresponding and receiving letters in the mail!
have a lovely weekend celebrating your nephew’s birthday! and thanks for the link love, lady! xo

  9. Re: the dress. I say go for it! I never regret a conversation piece.

  10. Alana says:

Apparently I’m not very good at math or logic, too!! Also, boo to thirsty avos. I love them so.

  11. Ahh New York – go to Smorgasburg, you’d love it!! (Also love the sandwich article, thanks for sharing!)

  12. Amy Grossman says:

while in NY, cross the bridge to Brooklyn. Go to Smorgasbored. Eat ice cream at Ample hill. Get pizza at either Franny’s or Emily’s or both. Eat at Martha’s, Prospect, Frankies and Dover. Have fun!

  13. revital says:

NY must eat: Jacob’s Pickles, the BEST brunch in Manhattan. Worth the wait for a table. Stop by E’s bar next door while you’re waiting, they have board games.

In Chinatown, stop by “Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles” (1 Doyers St.). It’s a total hole in the wall with the best noodles in all of Manhattan.

On the Lower East Side, Yonah Schimmel’s knishes is a worthwhile stop. An NY institution that won’t be around forever.

    Enjoy NY!

  14. Chia says:

I have that dress! It’s super cute and easy to wear (pockets FTW)! You should get it. I recently wore it to WonderCon and got so many compliments.

  15. Kelsey says:

I second “Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles” but also think if you’re gonna head to NYC you gotta try some NYC food, hit up Russ and Daughters Deli, or stay and sit in Russ and Daughters Café for some unbeatable bagels, lox, and atmosphere on the LES, and yes, get yourself into Brooklyn and possibly pizza at Roberta’s if you can get there early enough.

  16. Kathy says:

That vacuum looks like it should be part of a Cuisinart food processor or blender… At the very least a mixer. Vacuum and make some bread!

  17. Laura says:

Mad Sq Eats in happening now – a good way to get that Roberta’s pizza (among lots of other tasty things) without having to go all the way to Bushwick. Plus it’s in front of Eataly. I’ve recently had great meals at Ivan Ramen, The Fat Radish, and Gonzo Yaki (in Brooklyn) and can recommend any of these without hestitation. Also, really good coffee & vibe at Maman in Soho. And for a very grand brunch, Lafayette is excellent. if you haven’t done it before, take a walk through Koreatown, there are always good eats there. Have fun!
