Hot dogs are a must when camping. I love roasting them over the fire – they get smoky, snappy and are the epitome of outdoor cooking. And to be honest, I love hot dogs period, no matter how they’re prepared. I love them so much that I don’t have a problem having them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Probably not the most varied of diets while camping, but hot dogs are so versatile! Hilariously though, on this particular camping trip we ended up buying too many hot dogs. I know, I know, incredibly amateur move. But, we ended up making friends with our camp neighbors – a father son duo – and they happily accepted our extra unopened pack of hot dogs, so it didn’t end up being a hot dog emergency.

I used up the last two hot dogs that we had in this simple hash. I’m in love with hashes. I can still remember the very first one I ever made. It was after a high school sleepover – the night before my parents barbecued and my girlfriend and I stayed up way too late chatting playing M.A.S.H and watching music videos. The next day, I fried up some cubed leftover baked potatoes, random barbecued meats and eggs. It was heaven.

We didn’t have any leftover potatoes, or barbecued meats, so I made a simple hash out of what we did have: garlic, shallots, jalapeños, hot dogs, and eggs. It sounds like it would be super spicy and kinda sorta not good, but it ended up being one of Mike’s favorite camp meals. I really liked it too! Hash it up guys!

Camp Hot Dog Jalapeño Hash Recipe
serves 2

  • oil for the pan
  • 2-4 cloves garlic, crushed and roughly chopped
  • 1-2 shallots, roughly chopped
  • 2 hot dogs, diced
  • 2 jalapeños, seeds removed if necessary, diced
  • 4 eggs
  • salt and freshly ground pepper

Heat up a touch of oil in a cast iron pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and shallots and lightly brown. Add the hot dogs, turn up the heat and cook until hot dogs are caramelized, stirring occasionally. Add the jalapeños and cook for one minute. Crack the eggs into the skillet, scramble and remove from the heat. Season with salt and pepper and enjoy!
