Mike and I are in Montreal right now eating our hearts out. We’ve only ever been here once before and the last time, all of the food was amazing. There are some spots we are definitely going back to and some new spots that we’re planning to hit up. If you’re looking for somewhere new to visit that’s beautiful and full of good food, Montreal is the place to be. Here are our six things you absolutely can’t miss!

Chez Tousignant
Chez Tousignant is a retro fast food snack bar or as they say in French, casse croute. Typical casse croute serve things like burgers, poutine, and hot dogs and Chez Tousignant is no exception. What they do differently though is make everything in house: the hot dogs, the buns, the frozen custards, essentially everything except condiments. They have super cute branding and their poutine, especially the “galvaude” with chicken, peas, and gravy. Mike and I loved this place: simple, honest, Montreal-style food.

Foiegwa
This is a super cozy cute French-Canadian diner. They’re super instagramable and almost always have lines. When we went, we did late night and snuck into the bar where we sat side by side and shared the fried frogs legs with ranch, the bone marrow, the escargot, the fries, and spaghetti with truffle and a 64° egg yolk. Everything was delicious, probably because it was late at night, the rain was making the outside world slick and new and we were warm and cozy inside eating ALL THE FOODS. I loved the aesthetic and their super cute plates with the logo and Mike loved the cocktails. Some people say it’s overhyped but we just say it’s good.

Drogheria Conserverie
If you’re wandering around the Mile End area and see tons of people eating something out of a little white take out box and are wondering what it is, it’s street gnocchi from Drogheria Conserverie. Before Montreal I didn’t know that street gnocchi was a thing, but it should be a thing everywhere! The gnocchi is super soft and pillowy, served in either a classic sweet and tangy tomato sauce or a nicely spicy calabria sauce. Add the extra pecorino and you have the perfect lil snack for wandering around. We didn’t think we would finish the whole box because we just came from brunch, but by the end we were fighting over the last piece, it was that good.

St Viateur Bagel
If you’re in Mile End, then you definitely need to hit up the Montreal bagel shops. If you don’t think of bagels when you think of Montreal, you should! Montreal has a huge Eastern European population and they brought all the good stuff: bagels and smoked meat. There are several famous Montreal bagelries, the two most known (and sworn rivals) are Bagel Saint Viateur and Fairmount Bagel Bakery. The two shops are literally blocks from each other, so go ahead and try both, but I’m saying it right now, I’m a St Viateur girl, don’t @ me. First off, they have an insanely cute bagel mascot. Second, when we got the bagels (sesame for the win) St Viateur’s were fresh out of the oven. They were pleasantly crisp and chewy and doughy and everything a bagel should be. The Fairmount bagels were good too but just a touch sweeter and not quite as hot-n-fresh. They’re both open 24 hours so there’s no excuse to go an get your bagel on.

Il Miglio
Il Miglio is another must eat in Mile End. The casual Italian lunch counter is beloved amounts locals and for good reason. Every day the menu changes and the fresh pasta made in house is to die for. It’s kind of a eat and go kind of place that mainly serves the office lunch crew, but the room is bright and friendly with a long counter at the window where you can eat and take your time. Like most places in Montreal, they have excellent branding. Simply some of the best Italian we’ve had. The sauces were fresh, the pasta was al dente and we (well, really, I) ate entirely too much.

Kem Coba
Kem Coba is a super cute local ice cream joint run by a husband and wife duo. Based on the lines alone, it might be the best place for ice cream in town. It’s right next to the street gnocchi place (and also pretty close to the bagels). Make a day of it and get some ice cream too. There’s usually a line, but it goes pretty quickly (or try to go during off hours) and the inventive flavors are worth waiting for. Make sure you taste the specialty soft serve twist flavors – they change on the regular. When we went there wasn’t a line so we were able to taste a lot of the flavors before deciding, but while we were heading out, the line was building. Creamy, cool, and perfectly balanced ice cream on a hot Montreal day can’t be beat.

I’m planning on going back soon, so I’m excited to see this list! I went very briefly several years ago and Regine Cafe was the best brunch I’d ever had, March Jean Talon was so cool to walk around, and Au Pied de Cuchon was too popular for us to get a table, but the foie gras poutine eaten on a city bench was still so good.

I highly recommend either of two Chuck Hughes restaurants – Garde Manger or Le Bremner. Both great, both require reservations well in advance. And for total culinary overload – Martin Picard’s Au Pied de Cochon!

Agrikol, a Haitian restaurant in Montreal, is a place I still think about once a week. Living in Los Angeles, we don’t have a chance to eat really tasty Haitian food, so if you are still in Montreal, its a place not to be missed. And the atmosphere is fire!
