Happy 2018!

Happy 2018 Friends! I hope you guys are having a chill vibes new years day full of good food and good people. Mike and I spent the last day of 2017 chilling out in our little Tokyo rental, having homemade oden. We counted down with Japanese TV, had some traditional midnight soba, then headed out to the shrine right next to our place to get in some festivities. There were takoyaki stands, and roasted fish stands, and so many people lining up to make their good luck new years wishes. We did too, in hopes that 2018 is going to be one our best yet.

Truth is, 2017 was an extremely good year. That’s not to say that it didn’t have its ups and downs, because what’s life without contrast? A couple of 2017 highlights: our epic road trip that included many, many lobsters eaten, Mike doing more and more posts on this lil blog, our Tokyo trip, the total solar eclipse, our camping adventures, and a renewed interest in noodles. As for the lowlights, well, I’m not one to dwell on them…hahaha, no, I’m totally a dweller, but not really a sharer, so just know that 2017 was one of the hardest yet.

I’m looking forward to 2018 because I’m a sucker for blank slates and the beginning of the year is always so fresh and so clean. This year I’m hoping to conquer peking duck, and my one true nemesis, macaron. Mike said he’s going to perfect Vietnamese baguettes. I see a lot of trial and error in 2018 and for once, instead of being disappointed by my mistakes, I’m going to embrace them.

Here’s a little new years wish from one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. I met him once, a very long time ago and gave him some goldfish shaped decorated sugar cookies that he probably didn’t eat. I love his writing and I love the sentiment in this wish very much. I hope I take it to heart this year and I wish each and every one of you a happy 2018.

This year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple.

And it’s this.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. – Neil Gaiman

Happy 2018 friends. This life my not be perfect, but it is what we make it, and it’s ours.
xoxo steph
