Easy Gourmet

Um, guess what guys? I wrote a COOKBOOK! Okay, this is not exactly new news, but I’m so excited that I want to whisper-shout it from the rooftops. Whisper-shout because I’m actually kind of shy and the idea of shouting from the rooftops makes me more than a little nervous. It was a wild, crazy ride and I’m still pinching myself to see if I’m dreaming. Easy Gourmet is full of everything I love to cook and eat. It’s out on September 2nd, just a wee bit before my birthday and it’s the best birthday present I ever gave myself! (You guys do give yourselves birthday presents, right?!)

It’s been hard to not talk about it, because I’m so excited, but it’s hard to talk about it too, because I’m terrified. When I write my posts, I like to pretend that I’m sending out my food and photos into the giant black hole that is the internet. It’s easy to pretend that no one’s seen my post on eggs or my grilled cheese and egg combos. I’m fairly good at deluding myself. But, you guys, this is REAL. I have a book coming out!

confused/mildly happy/really, really happy

I’m kind of uncomfortable tooting my own horn, but I guess better get used to toot-tooting if I want this book to be a success. I’m hoping that the food can speak for itself though. Some of my absolute favourites are: the buttermilk fried chicken and waffles, the lemony bone marrow pasta, the maple glazed duck with sriracha honeyed carrots, the shrimp salad rolls, the miso glazed eggplant, the banh mi pulled pork sliders and the deep-fried calamari and bacon. But really, everything is delicious and fun because that’s what cooking is about, right?

chicken n waffles

chicken and waffles. because chicken. and. waffles.

I still can’t believe that Easy Gourmet is real. So, thank you, dear readers, for visiting I am a Food Blog. This book wouldn’t exist without you. Thank you for your comments, for your insight, for your support. A million, million x’s and o’s.

miso eggplant

miso glazed eggplant. kind of like eggplant creme brûlée.

Oh, and if you blog and would like a review copy, let me know. I will have a limited supply available and I would LOVE if you guys would do me the honour. Pretty please?! Hit me up at nom [at] iamafoodblog.com and I’ll be in touch. I’m really, really excited (as I’m sure you can tell from my copious use of exclamation marks) and I hope you are too! I don’t have any more review copies! :(

bone marrow pasta

lemony bone marrow pasta. so luxurious. so good.

Also, if you have any questions about how I got my book deal or the book writing process, just leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer! I’m also thinking of putting up a FAQs page, so if you have any questions that don’t relate to the book, please feel free to ask as well!
xoxo Steph

You are such an inspiration. Keep it up.

    1. steph says:

Hi, great book! happy for you! Beautiful pictures. I have a question regarding the design of your site, is it custom made or where did you get it? I love it! Do you have any tips for food bloggers who are just starting out?

    1. steph says:

It’s a custom WordPress theme :) As for tips…oh there are so many, but I think the biggest one is keep at it! Do it for yourself and the rest will fall into place. Also, be consistent and don’t stop posting :)

    1. steph says:

Thanks Aimee! September is my favourite month…I LOVE fall-time :)

  16. Erika says:

Holy crap that photo of the miso eggplant is just so beautiful and you are too!!!!!! I am soooooooo excited for you. And um I want to hear EVERYTHING about the book writing/deal getting process!! How long did it take you to write/shoot the book? How did the deal come about? Was this cookbook premise your idea or were you approached with a specific idea in mind? WHAT IS YOUR HUSBAND SAYING ABOUT YOU NOW?!? hahaha

    1. steph says:

Aww thanks Erika!! I’d say it took me a good year for the overall process from start to finish. That is, conceptualizing, writing, testing, photographing, designing, etc. Shooting it went pretty quickly once all of the recipes were tested and perfected. About two months, I’d say. Well, I guess I think that’s fast but I’ve heard of other people doing it even FASTER! The editors definitely had a theme in mind but I pretty much had a LOT of creative freedom.

As for Mike…I guess he’s eaten his words?!? hahahhah Nah, he’s been super supportive and I’m so lucky to have someone who’ll eat ALL of my creations, even in their first draft forms hahahhah

  17. cynthia says:

WAAAHOOOOOOOOOO STEPH!! I’ll never get tired of shouting from the rooftops for you. Still so so so thrilled and excited for you — and so touched how humble, grounded and down-to-earth you have been throughout this process. You’re a gem of a friend and such an asset to the food blog world, lovely lady. This book looks unbelievable (and my stomach is growling just looking at these photos! The miso eggplant!) So many congrats again :D

    1. steph says:

thank you so much sweet cynthia!! YOU are an asset to the food blog world!

  18. Brodie says:

ERMAGERD! This book looks amaze! Can’t wait to get my mitts on a copy – any idea how I could find one down here in Australia? *fingers crossed*

    1. steph says:

ooh, I hope it’ll be available in Australia! There’s a kindle version, but hopefully it’ll be down there too!

  19. Mathilde says:

I am your blog for sometime now, I’m very happy for you. Your book is already in my wish list.

    1. steph says:

      thank you so much Mathilde!

  20. Congrats to you! One of my new fave food blogs…love the photography!

    1. steph says:

      thanks Chandara! :D

  21. Ashley says:

Yay! Congrats a hundred times! I’m excited to get my hands on your cookbook, since I’ve been trying recipes you’ve posted here and LOVING them! The lemongrass meatballs for the quinoa bun bowl? Soooooooooo good, plus my husband loved them so much he stole the leftovers for lunch the next day (bully!).

  22. Congrats! I’ve always wanted to ask you this. I love your photos! And I noticed that sometimes they look lik they were shot in “studio” environment, and some time natural light (I could be wrong…). I just want to know what’s your opinion on both? Which do u prefer? Thanks!!!

    1. steph says:

Mandy, I love YOUR photos!! to be honest, i exclusively shoot in artificial light. for me, it’s so much easier to control, seeing as i can’t exactly control the sun! how about you!? which do you like better?

      1. hhaaa I shoot exclusively with artificial light, too! But not because I prefer it but because WE EAT DINNERS AT NIGHT! hahhaaa. I think eating cold food that was made during the day just for photos kind of violates my food-lover principles. I’m not sure I’ve learnt how to “control” it yet… every time it feels like a struggle to be honest..hahaa

  23. Jehanne says:

So happy for u, I discovered you through Saveur and so glad to discover such an awesome blog! Especially when I can relate to condensed milk love :) now waiting anxiously to buy your book !
